How to Create a Gift Certificate Program

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Jaya Schillinger It’s that time again - youre starting off a new year and thinking about your business goals for the year. One of those goals will most likely include an intention to bump up your business a little and bring in some more revenue. One promotional idea worth exploring is a gift certificate program. Retailers almost always have a gift certificate system in place, but a lot of service businesses don’t. Why not? The answer I hear most often is “I haven’t got around to it yet!” So I’m going to share a couple tips to get you started. What kind of gift certificates do you want? There are 2 basic types. It’s really nice to have both: The paid-for kind of gift certificate is purchased by one of your customers for another person. Not only is it a way to serve new customers, it’s a way to serve your current ones. People love sharing experiences, and when you create a really positive one for the recipient, the gift giver will feel great about it! Another type is the free gift certificate. That might be a gift from you to a current customer, a promotion to attract new ones, or a thank you gift for the people that help you throughout the year. Tracking your gift certificates The simplest way is to create a paper log-book or Excel spreadsheet. Besides recording the purchase date, amount, recipient’s name, and redemption date, also include the purchaser’s name & contact information in case you are must issue a refund as per some state laws. Showing the dollar value If you’re in a service business, most people buying gift certificates are paying for a particular service they want their friend to have. In this case, it’s really nice to write that on the certificate itself, for example, “Good for a 60-minute Reiki session.” But what if you raise your prices later or the recipient wants something different? It’s smart to put the dollar value on the certificate, in a very small discreet way. On free certificates, you might want to show the dollar value so people understand its worth, but write “no cash value” very small so that there’s no confusion about it being refundable for money. To present or not to present? Businesses often stipulate that the certificate “must be presented at time of service.” That policy does help prevent fraud, but you can’t enforce it without getting the customer really upset. This is where your tracking system is truly necessary. Don’t be surprised when 98% of gift certificate holders come in without the paperwork. Trust me on this one. It’s better to be elegantly prepared. Expiration dates In most states, it is illegal to put an expiration date on gift certificates that were sold for money. If you feel anxious having unused certificates floating around without expiry, you may put a “must be redeemed by” date on them, but here’s the rule: when the expiry date passes, you must refund the purchaser in full. Only after you’re refunded the purchaser in full can you void the certificate. The no-expiration rule does NOT apply to free certificates. Since no money has changed hands, the expiration date is up to you. Refunds You can pretty much create whatever policy you want, as long as you have one. You can offer cash refunds, “store credit only” refunds, or a combination. For example, if you sold an hour massage certificate for $100, but the redeemer only wants a $65 pedicure, your policy will determine whether they get cash back, credit towards future services, or if they can use the difference to buy products or put it towards the tip. Do keep in mind that if you should happen to go out of business, you are required by law to issue cash refunds to the purchasers of all unused gift certificates. That’s why you need to keep records. You will need to check with your particular state for any area specific laws that may govern your area. A good place to begin this search is with your states Department of Consumer Affairs. How to design your gift certificates There are 3 basic ways you can create your certificates. I’ll start with the least expensive ones first. Do-it-yourself gift certificates from your computerThe most affordable way is to use a program like Microsoft Word or Publisher. If you aren’t sure how to start from scratch, there are free templates you can download and customize at the Microsoft Template Gallery. Alternatively, most office supply stores have pre-printed gift certificate stationery for sale. You can format them with your computer, or even hand write them if you’ve got nice writing. Pre-printed gift certificates Just like ordering pre-printed checks, you can order pre-printed gift certificates. These cost a little more, but they can look really nice with your logo or embossing done on nice paper. This company even sells tracking forms you need, if you’re not sure how to do it yourself: www.giftcentral.com Credit-card style gift certificates If you’ve got a bigger business with a POS checkout system, these are pretty cool. It used to be that only huge retail stores had this type of certificate, but now anyone can sell them. Because they look like a credit card, people understand that they must present the card to use it, and it makes “store credit only” refunds really easy to manage. If your bank doesn’t offer them, here’s another source: www.customgiftcard.com Make it special Whatever kind of certificate you use, make it look as attractive as you can. It should fit the style of your business, and its perceived value should match the gift. So if you’ve got a $200 gift certificate for example, it should be on nice paper, in a nice envelope, or maybe even a gift box. Have fun creating your gift certificates! The Art of Seduction

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Jason Ess The art of seduction - there’s something in that phrase that brings up images of a Casanova creating an effortless sexual magnetism and guiding a woman towards discovering his seductive charisma. In many ways seduction is an art form but the good news is that it won’t take you years of developing your talents and abilities like a master painter. The art of seduction has nothing to do with the traditional dating advice that pours from the mainstream media and dating websites. Most of the advice that you’ll find out there is at best useless and at worst counter-productive. Their guidance feeds into the now popular belief that the woman is the prize to be won and that the man should work hard to get her, casting himself at her feet like a lost puppy begging for attention. So how is the true art of seduction different? It involves ridding yourself of the programming that society tells you is the way to go. It’s reclaiming your sense of being a man who is naturally attractive to women, a man who has a strong sense of his own identity, needs and personal boundaries. Rest assured, the path towards becoming a master of the art of seduction is simpler than you may have ever believed. There are men who have taken this path and discovered the most effective methods, techniques and principles of generating powerful attraction. This removes the pain and embarrassment of searching around in the dark and falling flat on your face trying desperately to figure out what works - and what fails to work. The seduction community provides that guidance. Learn the powerful secrets of the art of seduction at http://www.seductionunderground.com. The Benefits Of Aromatherapy

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Fiona Shearer-Hann Unless youve been asleep for the past few years, youve probably heard something about aromatherapy. In fact, you might even be interested in learning more about aromatherapy, and the benefits it possesses. Aromatherapy has actually been around for at least six thousand years. It was used in China in the form of incense burned in temples, and in the oils the ancient Egyptians used in embalming and other rituals. In some form or another, aromatherapy has been utilized in human civilization ever since. However, its only in recent years that aromatherapy has really come into its own. In fact, only now is it being seen as a genuine science, as well as an ancient art. To many people, the idea of aromatherapy is just that: therapy derived from aromas. But in actual fact, its much more. Aromatherapy involves the utilization of essential oils, which are oils derived from plant matter (these oils are generally extracted by distillation, although other methods are often employed to do so). The plant parts used include leaves, flowers, stems, bark, roots, even the rinds of fruits. These essential oils dont actually feel oily as such, but they are miscible in oil, which gives them their oily nature. Theyre very volatile, which accounts for their strong aroma, and contain a multitude of chemical compounds. Aromatherapy has been shown to be beneficial for a number of conditions, ranging from physical to mental ailments. Aromatherapy is particularly beneficial for stress (lavender oil is commonly used as a de-stressor), and many essential oils have an antibacterial or antifungal action, and can be applied directly to the skin (tea tree oil is an excellent example of this). Its not widely understood why essential oils have the effects on the body they do, but its most likely to do with the complex chemical structure of the essential oils, and the fact that the body can absorb these components (whether through inhalation, or through direct application through massage or the like). There are a number of ways aromatherapy is utilized, including: direct inhalation, steam inhalation (using a vaporizer or similar), in personal care products (added to creams, soaps, lotions etc), in a clay pot diffuser, a lamp ring diffuser or a nebulizing electric diffuser, or through massage with a carrier oil. There are also aromatherapy candles on the market, which when burned release the essential oils into the atmosphere in a similar way to a diffuser. Another common use of essential oils is in bathing, where a few drops of an essential oil are added to bath water, and mixed in vigorously. This is an excellent way for the user to both inhale the aromas, as well as absorb the compounds through the skin. However, before you get stuck straight into the use of aromatherapy, remember that natural does not necessarily equal safe! Essential oils contain powerful often toxic ingredients, and must be used with care. Many essential oils can not be applied directly to the skin (as they are highly irritating) and the majority should not be ingested on any circumstances. Remember also that when it comes to essential oils, less really is more. A few drops of any essential oil is all you need. Adding more will not increase the power of the essential oil, and may instead produce deleterious effects (not to mention wasting the essential oil, many of which are quite expensive). Before using essential oils, its a good idea to read more about them. Youll find several great resources both online and offline detailing the effects and uses of the most common essential oils. Youll also learn more about blending essential oils for maximum effect, and any safety considerations you have to be aware of. How Would You Like Windows in Your Sidewalk?

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Delmar Germyn If you want to build yourself a real unique set of stepping stones or pour a sidewalk that everyone who sees it will talk about, try this. You can use this idea to make a terrific looking hypertufa trough or planter as well. The first thing you need to do is get a clean empty garbage can or five gallon pail and head down to your local auto glass shops and ask them if you could have the broken glass from the garbage. They have to pay to get rid of it so they will be glad to give it to you. You will be saving them money. I should add that it would be a good idea to take a good stout pair of gloves and a broom and shovel. You will have to scoop and sort a little and this broken glass can be a little irritating to the skin. The glass you want is the stuff from rear and side windows. Im sure you have seen one break at one time or another. They shatter into little cubes about or so in size. Get as much as you think you will need and take it home. Spread it out and clean out anything that is not glass. Now wash it with a hose and sweep it into a container. The next batch of concrete you mix use the window glass instead of your normal 1 -2 3 mix. Make it 1 cement 2 sand 2 aggregate 1 glass mix. (1 2 2 1) This makes a real interesting looking finish and you will be helping save some space in the landfill. You can use this mix in stepping stones, walkways, curbs, and just about any place you would use a standard concrete mix. Some of the glass will show on the surface and you can tell your friends that you have windows in the sidewalk. If you want a bit of color some recycle places crush old bottles. The glass from there has lots of different colors and is a bit finer than the window glass. It is excellent as a sand replacement for ornamental casting. Use a mix of 1 cement, 2 sand, 1 glass for this. An old time Seer, I have been around this Planet for 2.34 centuries. I used to travel with my dragon to fairs and teach gardening skills. Planning The Perfect Wedding - Top Five Secrets Of A Successful Groom

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Scott Fromherz Let’s face it, the wedding is all about the bride. But behind every good bride is a rock steady groom who is ready for anything. Having successfully navigated one of life’s most exciting and important milestones, I feel it my duty to pass-on my hard earned advice. So without further ado, here are my top five “Secrets of a Successful Groom:” 1. Be a “Pillar Of Strength” - This wedding planning stuff is an emotional roller-coaster. You WILL fight, you WILL laugh, and one of you might even cry. Your primary role is to be steadfast and sure; to be “a shoulder to cry on.” To stand-up for your future wife when some wedding planner is trying to rip her off, or a photographer is giving her a bad deal. Be strong - Be a man. 2. You Really Do Care - You could probably care less whether the shoes are white or ivory, but you need to act like you really do care. Actually listen to what she’s asking you. It might seem like the most mundane question in the world, but just try to give your best answer…and then expect to be disagreed with. She may or may not need your input, but she definitely needs a sounding board for her ideas. 3. You Made the Right Decision - What comes with this emotional roller-coaster is the occasional feeling that you may have made the wrong decision in asking her hand in marriage. Did I jump the gun? Should I have waited longer? Am I going to be able to live with this woman for the rest of my life? These thoughts are completely NORMAL. Marriage is a huge commitment, and during the excitement of the ring-buying and the proposal you had briefly forgotten how serious it is. Just remember that you put a lot of thought into this decision, and you wouldn’t have made it if you didn’t think it was the right one. Keep telling yourself, “These thoughts are NORMAL.” 4. Start Thinking About Your Toast - It’s never to soon to start thinking about what your going to say for your toast. Some grooms don’t have to do this, but if you do, then start thinking about it. It’s amazing how hard it can be to come up with a few simple words. Consider using a template from a website or a book. 5. Don’t Forget About The Wedding Ring - You thought you were all done when you forked out your life’s savings for that giant rock on her finger. Guess what…you still have to buy her wedding ring. Talk to your jeweler about how much warning he needs to have them ready. It’s okay to bring the bride with you for this one. Well that’s it. I’m sure you can find some great tips in other articles, but I feel that these tips will serve you well. Just take a deep breath, be patient, and remember the golden rule: SHE IS ALWAYS RIGHT. Rock Fishing Techniques

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Darren Tidmarsh Many shore anglers avoid fishing rock marks because they are scared of losing tackle. However, very few marks are totally unfishable, and often the most effective rigs for fishing rough ground marks are also the most basic. Before fishing any shore mark, rough ground marks in particular, it is a good idea to visit the area at low water. The best time to go is at low water on a spring tide, when much of the ground that you will later be fishing over will be uncovered. Look for features like gullies, weed beds, or patches of sand sandwiched between kelp beds. These are the places where items of food collect, and the places where the fish will feed once the tide has flooded. If you are unfamiliar with the mark, it is also very important to try to pick out any area where the flooding tide could cut off your retreat. The first stumbling block for many anglers preparing to tackle a rough-ground mark is the choice of end rig. End rigs should be tied as simply as possible. Rock marks are certainly not the places to use complex rigs with lots of swivels, bait-clips and beads, all of which will increase the rig’s snagging potential. Rigs should usually incorporate some sort of rotten bottom to attach the lead (try using an old spark plug) as this will break free if it becomes snagged. A simple running paternoster is an ideal rig. You seldom need to fish at any distance and at some marks species like wrasse can be more or less under your feet. If long-range fishing is necessary, it is important to ensure that the lead will not break away from the rotten bottom during casting. One of the easiest ways to do this is to use a pulley rig tied from a minimum 501b bs line with a loop at the bottom. The rotten bottom attaches the lead to the loop, and the loop is then pushed through the eye of the lead. A small nail pushed through a ‘/4in diameter polyball is then inserted through the loop of nylon, to hold it secure during casting. On contact with the water, the nail floats free, aided by the buoyant polyball, leaving the rig anchored by the rotten bottom. The addition of a lead lift can further assist end-rig recovery over rough ground. Many anglers make the mistake of using too light a main line when fishing rough ground. You should expect to get snagged on the bottom from time to time, and you will need a fairly substantial main line to break even an 8lb rotten bottom. It is also inevitable that your line will get chaffed from constant contact with rocks, and chaffed 251b line will give you a far better chance of landing a big fish than damaged 151b line.Too light a lead is another common mistake. A light lead will get washed around by the tide or swell until it snags. It is far better to use a heavier lead, which will hit the bottom and stay put. If there is any lateral tide or swell consider using a grip lead, which will anchor your end rig firmly, preventing it from dragging into snags. The grip wires can even prevent the lead falling into tight crevices. Another very common mistake is moving the lead after it has touched bottom, just to see if it has snagged. If the lead was not snagged, there is a good chance that you’ll drag it into a snag when moving it. The first time that you attempt to move the end rig should be either when you strike or when you reel in to check your bait. In the latter case, lift the rig as high in the water as you can with one firm upward swoop of the rod. Then, keeping your rod tip high, wind furiously to get the rig up to the surface and clear of the worst of the snags. The new generation of high-speed-retrieve reels are better suited for this sort of work than small, baitcasting multipliers. There’s Nothing ‘New Age’ About Receiving Answers from God

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Barbara Rose, Ph.D. Here are the 3 most common questions I am asked about this topic: How do I know Im not making it all up? How do I know God really hears me? Why would God want to answer me? Now, I am going to give you the answers. How do I know Im not making it all up? The only way you will know that you are not making it all up is with actual practice, and to see over a period of time that there is no way on this planet that you could receive the information about which you previously knew nothing about, and yet, it is all completely accurate. It takes practice, that is all. How do I know God really hears me? God is inside of you. Not up in haven on a throne with a feather pen, writing down your deeds to sentence you to a life in (non-existent) hell. You have something called a soul. You have intuitive feelings and perceptions. You have gut instincts. THIS is how God communicates with you. All you need to do is listen, and follow that still small voice all the time, because if youve ever had a gut feeling, you know that whenever you followed it, you never went wrong. Whenever you went against it, there was regret. So its not so much God hearing you, as it is are you hearing God? Do you trust the information you receive that is available to you every moment of your life? Now, you really can take it a major step further, and take out a pen and pad, and write down your questions from your heart, where you genuinely want a real answer to anything that may be troubling you. It could be a personal or business decision. It could be about another person you are thinking of getting closer to. It could be about anything that really matters to you. Just ask the question, take some deep breaths, and ask from divine truth to come into your mind, and then write it all down as it flows into your mind. That is all there is to it. With a lot of practice, the ego will get out of the way, and you will begin to soar with ALL of you senses, as opposed to limiting yourself to just five. You will know God hears you, after you see the many answers you receive that really make a significant and positive difference in your life time after time. Why would God want to answer me? For the very same reason he/she answers any being that ever lived on earth. All of humanity is equal. If God answered people thousands of years ago, why on earth would he/she stop now? Its time you equalized yourself with the rest of the human race, and stopped putting others above you. Yes, we can all learn from others, and we can all receive the information directly to learn from God right in the privacy of our own home. You are as much an equal part of God as Jesus was. Furthermore, Jesus came to bring humanity this same message, So after over 2,000 years, the majority of humanity is still operating with mostly five senses. I think its time the entire human race used all six it would spare people a lot of misery when they can receive direct answers to anything that is on their, your mind. It makes life much easier to live when you have a steady light to guide you, no matter what you are facing. Copyright by Barbara Rose, Ph.D. All Rights Reserved.
