By Rick Carruth First, this post is not about magic, or how to perform magic. It’s about getting a position in a restaurant performing your particular brand of magic. Working as a close-up performer in a restaurant is probably the easiest way for the inexperienced magician to gain valuable ‘face time’. It’s also one of the best ways to develop your close-up skills and work on your confidence. Working the same location, week after week, requires a different strategy and finesse from say - working birthday parties. Approaching friends, family, and co-workers to get a birthday gig is one thing - approaching the general manager of a national restaurant chain is something else. Here is a list of tips I consider “essential “: (1) Look for the proper type of Restaurant - It will be your responsibility, among other things, to help the restaurant cover that period of time between ordering and receiving the order. Seek restaurants that meet the criteria of having a legitimate ‘wait time’. TGI Fridays and Applebees aregood examples. Pizza restaurants that cook pizza on-demand are another good example. (Customers typically wait at least fifteen minutes on a fresh baked pizza) There are always exceptions to this ‘rule’, but these type of restaurants are a good place to begin your search. Since many restaurants hire magicians to work on typically slow days of the week in order to increase mid-week traffic, mention that you, for a fee of course, can just as easily perform for waiting customers on weekends. Not only will these customersappreciate the time-consuming entertainment, but it will help cut down on walk-offs that leave at the first sight of a long line. This little-used technique will definitely bring more money into the restaurant and keep paying customers from going elsewhere. Plus, it gives YOU work both during the week and on weekends. (2) Dress Appropriately - To be taken seriously, dress seriously. I’m not suggesting you wear a tuxedo to an interview, but as Michael Finney is fond of saying..” dress like you have some place more important to go later.” (3) Leave the Case - Don’t walk in carrying your close-up case, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to have it in your car. Leaving it outside will give you a few moments to think about what strong magic you want to show the general manager/owner -IF- they insist on seeing a sample of your magic. (4) Deal with the Decision-Maker Only - You’re not there to perform a free show for someone who can only refer you to someone else. Although some performers say call and set an appointment, I say go to the restaurant about one-thirty, eat lunch, and then ask to speak to the general manager/owner. Because you’re there as a customer, it makes it more difficult for the manager to ‘brush you off’. The manager should respond to you as he would any other customer. Once at your table, ask him if he has a couple of minutes to ‘talk’. Chances are, even after you disclose your reason for wanting to talk, he will still see you as a customer, and not an inconvenience. Go on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, and try to talk to the manager around two-thirty - the slowest part of the day for most decision makers. Ask the manager to have a seat. It puts you both on an equal level. Be confident. (5) Be Prepared - Give the owner/manager a promo package of some sort. If you have to go to the mall and get a good photo of yourself at the glamour photo place - do it - and attach a business card to it. If you have a resume, take copies with you to give out, as well. (6) Convince the Owner/manager - The owner/manager must be convinced that you can increase their business on traditionally slow days. If you’re working on salary (or by the hour), you need to show that you can increase traffic enough to cover your pay. Don’t wait until you’re asked- to outline your plan. Have three or four good examples mentally ready, and look for an early opportunity to present them. Tell the powers-that-be what YOU can do for THEM, and how you can make them look good in the eyes of their owner, regional manager, or spouse. They aren’t interested in how many awards you’ve won, or how many other restaurants you perform for. They’re interested in THEIR bottom line. Managers are in charge for a reason - they know how to separate profitable ideas from costly ones. (7) Compromise- Offer to work one night for free - if the management has reservations about your ability or usefulness. Give the a chance to see, first hand, the effectiveness of your magic. If you’re offered a tip, politely decline, and ask that, instead, they put in a good word with the manager. This is VERY Important. (8) Pick your Poison - If you’re talented and personable, you can make more working for tips. Keep in mind that you will be competing against the wait staff, to a degree, for the customers money. Think of creative ways to work WITH the wait staff instead. Consider offering them a tip if they refer tables to you. I wouldn’t ‘quote’ them a dollar amount, instead, just tip them a percentage of your tips. If they can ‘pre-qualify’ the table, it will save you time and money in the long run anyway. (9) Get Paid Accordingly - If you decide to work on salary, or hourly, remember that you will perform a valuable service for the restaurant - one that no one but you can perform. You deserve to be paid according to your talents. Good wait staffers can easily make a hundred dollars plus a night. Shouldn’t you? (10) Negotiate - To make your job easier, negotiate the right to place card holders on the tables. This lets the customers know you’re working, that you’re working for tips or courtesy of the management, whatever the case, and to request a visit to their table through the wait staff. Some of the biggest names in magic perform regularly in restaurants. Not so much because they need to - but because they want to. It’s the perfect place to introduce new magic in your repertoire and make important contacts that may lead to very profitable performances. The size of your display depends on the amount of space you have committed to at the show, and whether it is an island space or an in-line space. It also depends on your target audience and your trade show goals and budgets. Show Flow When laying out your booth design, carefully examine your spot on the show floor plan. Depending on your location (on an isle, near an entrance, near food, etc.) you can determine the ideal flow that is how you would like show attendees to move through your booth. A good display takes foot traffic from any direction, invites it in, and moves it along in a comfortable way. Comfortable Space Be careful not to over-crowd your booth with too much product, too much literature, or an overwhelming display. Show goers have limited time to take it all in, and most dont like to be weighed down with too much information or too much stuff. Over-crowded booths inhibit a good show flow, too, and will cause people to skip your booth in favor of another that is less cramped. Tabletop Displays Some shows - particularly small venue shows, local shows and meetings, or single day shows call for a scaled down version of a display. Tabletop displays as well as Banner Stands are ideal for these events. Many tabletop displays are available as rental displays. Check with your display vendor to see what your options are for small venue shows. In-Line Displays Displays that back up to a wall or to pipe-and-drape are called in-line displays. These displays are most commonly 10×10 or 10×20 displays. Configurations and options for in-line displays are many and include pop-up systems, truss systems and even cabinet and countertop systems. Given your booth size and budget, your display vendor should be able to show you many different options. Island Displays When it comes to making a big impression at a trade show, nothing beats an island display. Visible from all four sides, island displays give exhibitors great options for inviting people into a booth in a comfortable way. By Lisa Lambson Do you control your stash or does it control you? I have become the master of my stash. When my husband found out that his sock drawer had become yet another place for cross stitch supplies, it was either get it under control or end up in divorce court. Being a stay at home mom of four, I quickly realized that being a single mom would seriously hamper my stash purchasing power and set off to become as organized as possible. First stop Patterns When I began my mission to organize my stash, I realized that there were many different options available. In fact, it was a little overwhelming, not to mention expensive. I started with my chartpaks. Nordic Needle has a neat little product called Pattern Finder. It is a lidded box with a divider so you have two rows in one box. It includes labels and a master index list to tape to the outside. While this product is fairly inexpensive, I chose to make my own out of a cardboard storage box and labels that I printed off of my computer. I sorted them by designer and attached a label with a number on it. Then, I printed a master list of all the charts with the name and number so when I need find one, I just look on the master list and get the number and pull it out. Now, books and leaflets are pretty easy, as well. I have a small bookcase that I put them all on and just group them by designer. Then, we get to the tougher stuff. All those magazines! There are many ways to keep magazines in an organized fashion, so you need to figure out which method is right for you. 1. The first method is to take the magazine apart and file each project in a sheet protector and store them in a binder. I think that this is too much work and too much money, but some people like to do this so that they can file them into specific categories. 2. The second method you can use is to purchase, or make your own, organizer boxes. Again these can be purchased from Nordic Needle fairly inexpensively. I have heard suggested that you can make your own out of empty cereal boxes or empty laundry soap boxes. The nice thing about these boxes is that you can generally store a couple of years worth of a magazine in one box and have them all together in one place. 3. A third way to keep track of your magazines in to put them in binders. Cross Country Shopping has a spot on their site to order a free catalog and they offer these binders. The advantages? a. They are sturdier than the cardboard boxes. b. Hold up to two years of a magazine in one binder. c. They usually come with at least one years worth of Bookkeepers. You slide the magazine through the bookkeeper which is 3-hole punched to go into the binder. The disadvantages? a. Cost (You could just get the bookkeepers and use your own binders. You can purchase the bookkeepers separately at Cross Country Shopping, The Cross Stitch Zone or Yarn Tree.) b. They usually come printed with the name of the magazine printed on them. For instance, the ones that Cross Country Shopping sell are made to hold Cross Country Stitching Magazine, therefore, that is what they say on the front of the binder. To avoid this and to save on the cost of the binders, I would purchase some plain, inexpensive binders. So, now you have chosen a way to store them all, how do you keep track of what you have? While it is great fun to go through all of those charts and magazines, it isnt very time efficient. Now, you could just take a notebook and write out every chart that you have and where it is, but with the power of technology we have some much better options. There are computer programs that you can enter your charts into and let the program keep track of it for you. Here are a couple of them for you to check out. Both of these programs allow you to download a trial version to try it out. 1. “CrossMagic CrossMagic is a database program for cross-stitch enthusiasts. It allows you to enter and maintain details on all your threads, charts and projects. It will print reports on what threads you’ve run out of and need to buy again, which charts you can make with your existing stock of floss, what floss you need to buy to make a particular chart, inventory lists, which projects you’ve completed and which are still under construction, it will even let you enter a search text and will list all the charts you own that pertain to that subject. Comes with a complete catalogue of DMC & Anchor Embroidery Floss, Balger/Krenik Filament, DMC Flower Thread, Balger Ribbon, and you can add your own material types (i.e. beads) if you want to.” 2. “Floss Minder 3.0 for Windows 95/98/NT/2K is a database program for cross-stitching and embroidery enthusiasts. It allows you to maintain details on all your threads, charts, and projects. You can print reports on; the threads you’ve run out of and need to buy again, the charts you can make with your existing stock of floss, and much more. Floss Minder comes with Over 4,900 individual threads/beads from many different manufacturers including Anchor, Caron Collection, DMC, Kreinik, and Mill Hill to name a few.” I personally use Cross Magic and love it. It is time consuming to initially enter all of the information, but if you are an avid cross stitcher with lots of stash it is worth it. Then, as you get new stuff you just enter it as you get it and the program keeps track of what you have. Floss Floss can be kept track of in these programs, also, so you will always know what you have and what you have run out of. As far as floss storage, again, we have lots of options. I found all of these systems available from Yarn Tree listed under floss organizers at very reasonable prices. 1. “The LoRan System - A complete system to organize, store, and use all your floss. Constructed of vinyl, kit will expand to hold up to 150 skeins of floss. Contains 2 reusable Project Cards (one large and one small) with magnetic needleholder, and 5 Master Cards (to make it easy to cut the floss to the right length).” 2. “Floss Box with Keys(bobbins)System - Each floss key has a tab that holds the floss number band. All you do is trim the band and slip it onto the floss holder. The large Floss Box comes with 100 keys. The Lil’ Floss Box comes with 25 keys. You can choose either plastic or chipboard keys. The keys will fit most other brands of organizers. Keys (holders) measure 1 5/8″ tall by 1*” wide.” 3. ” Floss Sheets - Made of heavy duty clear vinyl. Each handy page stores 20 standard size bobbins of floss. They are easily organized in a notebook and are quickly available for your next project. Each pocket opens at the top. Five floss sheets per pack.” Fabric A word about fabric when storing your linen make sure you roll it on a cardboard tube rather than storing it folded up. If it is stored too long, the threads could break on the fold lines. I have all of mine stored in separate plastic storage containers for each thread count. Projects So, moving on. What about all the projects you are working on? You know - your UFOs! 1. Software - The software that was mentioned above would solve this concern, too. You can keep track of all of the projects that you have finshed and the current ones that you are working on. 2. Stitchers Journal - You could keep track of your projects in some kind of journal. One that I found online is called The Stitcher’s Journal and I have seen some others in the Nordic Needle catalogs. Also termed as Shalwar Kameez or Shalwar Qamis, Salwar Kameez, is popularly worn in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and India. Salwar Kameez is also called Punjabi suit, because it is very popular in both Indian and Pakistani Punjabs. Salwar Kameez is commonly worn by Punjabi, Hindu, Muslim women, and Muslim males in India. It is popularly worn by Pakistanis and Afghans. Salwar is called salwar in Punjabi and Hindi, Shalwaar in Gujarat, and Shalwar (شلوار قمیض) in Urdu. The word Salwar has actually come from Persian, and the word kameez has come from the Arabic word Qamis. A Salwar is loose pajama like trousers that is wider at waist and thighs, and tapering to the bottom, it is stitched narrow at the bottoms. Salwars are usually pleated at the waist and held up by a drawstring or an elastic belt, or a woven cord called Naala or Naada. There are different styles prevalent among women, but males usually wear normal Salwars. The side seams, known as chaak, are left open below the waist-line to give a wearer greater freedom of movement. Traditional kamiz, for both men and women, usually have normal or loose fitting, but some fashionable women do wear tight figure hugging kamiz. The necklines can be simple, decorative, embroidered, or beaded, etc. Salwar Kameez is very popular among Punjabi and North Indian Women. Women Salwar Kameez is usually accompanied by Dupatta, which is a long scarf or shawl like cloth made of light fabric. Women wear salwar-kamiz along with wearing dupattas around their heads or necks. Cotton is a soft breathable textile used for daily clothing. It is usually used for the salwar kamiz that are meant for general daily use or worn in routine life.
