Got the Pre-Wedding Jitters?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Irene Conlan Information for the Bride Youre in the last month before the wedding. What seemed fairly simple in the beginning has now morphed into what looks like an insurrmountable, out-of-control list of things to do. You thought you were organized and now it seems there are a million details still to be conquered, accomplished, put in order. (Emphasis here is on the word seems. Remember this.) From your point of view it may seem that: No one is helping No one understands Theres too much to do It costs too much Theres not enough time And: Where is HE and why isnt he helping more? This may move into: Maybe this is a mistake Maybe I should call the whole thing off Maybe I just thought I loved him Information For the Groom Things were going pretty well. You nodded your approval at which invitations she picked out, made a list of friends and family you wanted to invite and even addressed a few.You went with her to choose the venue, select a minister, pick a D.J. or live muisic, taste cake and look at flowers. You were fitted for the tux and shoes and youve planned the honeymoon. Now you just need to know when and where to show up. In the meantime you can sit back, watch the game and leave the details to the women. You begin to notice, however, that your beautiful bride-to-be is getting bossier and more short-tempered every day. She doesnt say much but her mood seems to be getting darker and she looks at you like youre from another planet. And you begin to wonder: Whats the problem here? Is this who she really is? Is this what it will be like after were married? This thing is getting way out of hand. And this begins to deteriorate into: This is not what I bargained for. Maybe Im not ready to get married. Maybe shes not the right one for me. If it gets to this STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! This is a time of tremendous stress for each of you. Your whole life is about to change and somewhere inside you, regardless of how much you love each other and how long youve been together, an alarm goes off. Change of this magnitude often creates fear and fear causes all kinds of disruption. Every tiny detail is magnified. Emotions are running like a raging river and cannot (seemingly) be contained. So what do you do? If youve been together for a number of years, you know how the other functions, and you know you love them and have made a commitment to become partners in every sense of the word. When you had a clear mind, you knew this is what you wanted. If this is not the case, then take a serious look about what youre doing so there is not an impasse on wedding day when one of you chooses not to show up. You know you want to continue and so: Bride - talk to the love of your life. Tell him how you feel. Make it clear what you need him to do. He is not unwilling (generally). He just doesnt know how to help and thinks the best thing to do is just stay out of the way. Tell him you love him and need him. Tell him what you want and need. He doesnt intuit this. You have to tell him. Groom - listen to her without judgment and without barking orders. Ask her how you can help. Ask her for specific instructions on how she wants it done and what the deadline is. If you do this, you may find that she relaxes and realizes that, actually, there isnt that much for you do to do. The most important thing for you to do is Stay calm Reassure her that you love her more than anything and that all you want is to be married to her. To Both of You If every tiny detail isnt perfect, your wedding will still be wonderful because its about how much you love each other and not about the tiny details. Its about you. Your guests will notice the love, not the color of the napkins. The guests will notice the radiance and be pleased that the flowers are nice and the music good. Your guests will notice the look in your eyes when you see each other and really wont care if the bridesmaids didnt have matching shoes or perfect hairdos. Take some time to be with each other. Just the two of you. DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE WEDDING OR WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE DURING THIS TIME. Talk about anything else. Talk about how much you love each other and how special the other is. As they say in sports, Keep your eyes on the prize. Soon it will all be over and you can settle into building a wonderful marriage. I’m Mad as Hell and I Refuse to be an Advertising Victim

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Keith A. Lee I stopped being an advertising victim in 1992 when I was first introduced to Dan Kennedy Marketing, and it is one of the most important lessons Ive learned. Im happy to say I havent been an advertising victim for 13 years. If you have been in business for awhile, it has already happened to you - probably more than once. In fact, probably often. And if you are new to the retail world, you can bet the mortgage that it will eventually happen to you. What is it? It’s when you get that big black checkbook out of the center desk drawer, and you sit down across from some media salesperson, and you write out some kind of a check for some amount, for some kind of promotion advertising expense, and you have no earthly idea whether you made a good decision, bad decision, when you’ll know, how you’ll know, if you’ll know. I detest that kind of uncertainty. I don’t like to play guesswork games with my money and I bet you don’t either. I’m going to tell you how to eliminate it, how to make every dollar you spend on advertising and marketing measurable and accountable. The Best Place To Spend Your Hard Earned Money On Advertising Is Direct Response!! All advertising can be one of only two types either “Institutional Advertising” or “Direct Response Advertising.” It is monumentally important to understand the difference. Most advertising in magazines, newspapers, on radio, TV, and billboards is institutional advertising. It is Institutional advertising because in most cases, there is no way of accurately tracking response. Most advertising agencies like institutional advertising since, without tracking, they canNOT be held responsible for zero results. If an ad campaign does not produce the results they want, they blame it on: 1. The economy 2. The weather 3. You didn’t run the ad often enough 4. YOU (your merchandise, your service, your image, etc.) You Can’t Deposit Creativity In The Bank Unfortunately, most advertising agencies are interested In being creative and cutesy. That’s what wins advertising awards. I think this is absolutely ridiculous. The advertising field gives awards based on creativity, not results. Many ads that have won top awards didn’t produce any substantial increases in sales. Direct response advertising, on the other hand: 1. Contains a headline that flags your prospect and creates curiosity 2. Creates interest in the merchandise 3. Creates desire in the prospect 4. Has a specific offer 5. Has a deadline 6. Has measurable results Why is this so important? Two reasons: 1. Most businesses have limited capital to spend on their marketing and advertising (unless you are Coca Cola or Microsoft). Since you have a limited budget, why waste it on advertising that you are not sure is working? 2. The only reason a business would advertise is to get more customers and sell more merchandise. A direct response ad concentrates only on this purpose. First, it contains a headline that attracts the attention of the specific customer you want to in your store(s). Then, it makes a complete and compelling case for the reason for your offer. Next, it proves to the customer that the reason for the offer will solve some problem in the customer’s life or provide some valuable benefit to him. It states specific reasons, facts, and statistics, as well as testimonials from other customers to validate the claims. Then it tells the reason why you are able to make such an attractive offer. It tells the customer what to do in order to gain the benefits of the offer. It creates “urgency” by telling the customer that he must act now in order to gain these important benefits, and why this offer is so limited, either by time, or by the quantity available. Finally, it must contain a way for you to track exactly what sales or customers were generated by that particular ad. Now that I have defined for you the difference between institutional and direct response advertising, here’s the big question that you have to ask yourself before you make every future marketing and advertising decision. Does the advertising that you are considering meet all six of the criteria that I outlined above? If is doesn’t, then pass on it as quickly as you can say: “I’m Mad as Hell and I Refuse to Be an Advertising Victim Again!” Keith Lee, owner of American Retail Supply headquartered in Kent, WA became president of the business in 1981 and later bought the business from its founder Dick Thompson. Although Lee credits much of their growth to increased product offerings and what he calls the best client service in the industry, he attributes the companies Herculean increase to the discovery of the world renowned Marketing Guru, Dan Kennedy. Now hes trying to get other entrepreneurs hooked. Keith recently became trained as a Dan Kennedy Certified No B.S. A lot of Kids Who Have Weight Problems Are into Surgery

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Eliza Maledevic There is just little number of children who ever tried the weight loss surgery. Since the operation is quit dangerous, with a death rate of over 1 is to 50. According to the federal statistics, only about 350 kids who had tried to go into operation in the year 2004. A group of four hospitals, led by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, are studying on how kids will respond to different weight loss surgery which includes the gastric bypass in doing this procedure a pouch is stapled off from the rest of the stomach and linked to the small intestine. There are three hospitals that got an approval from the Food and Drug Administration to examine on how kids react with a procedure called laparoscopic gastric banding, where an elastic collar installed around the stomach which actually limits the amount of the user can eat. But the FDA has hesitated to support the gastric band for kids. On the other hand, surgeons at New York University Medical Center reported in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery at the recent month that this device is effective. Actually those kids who participated with NYU’s study, which are 53 boys and girls, ages from 13 to 17, loses about half their weight in about 18 months. Crystal Kasprowicz, of St. James, N.Y stated that she lost 100 pounds from her previous 250 pounds by this band installed to her at the age of 17. She even mentioned that she took medication for a rapid heartbeat and was shown a sign of diabetes. She tried to stop getting bigger but she failed. But because of this procedure, she feels different now. The University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago and at the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian has also opened a weight-loss surgery center for kids. They are actually expecting about 50 operations within this year. Children can undergo operations after the six months trying to lose weight by using conventional methods under hospital supervision. Dr. Jeffrey Zitsman, associate attending surgeon at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital stated that no one has slimmed down enough to take on the surgery. Joanne Ikeda, a nutritionist emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley stated that she doesnt believe that altering the human digestive tract is actually the solution to excess weight. “It’s one of these quick-fixes that arent a fix at all.” She even added that doctors know quite little about the long term effects of this operation to young children. The federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality released a study in July stated that four in 10 weight-loss surgery patients develop complications in just six months. Along with adults, mortality rates among gastric bypass patients stay at between 1 in 100 and 1 in 200 patients. Laparoscopic gastric banding about 1 in 1000 patients but there are complications that occur. With those who participated with the NYU study, two patients needed a second operation to make some adjustment with the slipping band, five had infections, and two had hernias, five had encountered mild hair loss and four had iron deficiencies connected to their new diet. Evan Nadler, a pediatric surgeon and co-author of the study stated that one patient ask the band to be removed. But he advises some warning, he said that this can be tragic to kids. They have to be chosen with caution to make sure that this aggressive step is completely essential, he added. A Holistic Approach to TMJ

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Michael McCright Understand that TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) pain and associated problems make it difficult if not impossible to identify the exact nature of the cause of the problem. Holistic Specifics has approached TMJ with the attitude that we cannot fix everyone, but we can contribute greatly in the wellbeing and recovery of the many who are now suffering. As has been known for over 3000 years, tight, spasmed muscles have pain associated with TMJ. Tight muscles hurt. Through the use of Therapeutic Massage, we can address this tension and many times relieve it entirely. This soreness, or pain in many cases, is not readily acknowledged by the conscious mind, but is registered and controlled by the sub-conscious mind. In other words, we have developed habits (both good and bad) to deal with the discomfort. The muscle tightness we are talking about would be in, or associated with, those muscles that control chewing, speech, facial expression and swallowing. These muscles are affected by being over-used when grinding the teeth at night. They may be affected by your bite being mis-aligned. The muscles may have been traumatized during an accident, or when being slapped or struck on the side of the head. A disease such as arthritis may have set in, which complicates the issue. Some clinicians believe strongly that oral habits such as tongue thrusting, wide yawning, and nail, lip, or cheek biting, can precipitate a situation that puts the jaw in an abnormal position and may weaken or overstress the muscles. This continuous stress can result in tight and spasmed muscles. More females are prone to TMJ than are men, and a greater prevalence of women in their childbearing years suffer from TMJ. This may indicate a serious possibility of a need for better nutrition during those times when a woman is eating for two. Studies suggest that women on hormone replacement therapy were 77% more likely to seek help for TMJ as are women who are using oral contraceptives (19%). The downsides of the hormone estrogen is becoming more clear as more studies are being done. Work habits and posture, things that we do every day, are done without thinking. Those habits that affect the muscles of the jaw or those of the neck, head or even shoulders, may reflect into the jaw muscles. Habits such as cradling a telephone between your ear and shoulder, carrying a heavy shoulder bag, singing, anything that promotes a forward head position, or hunching forward can contribute to tension throughout the body, as well as spasmed muscles. Stress can manifest itself in so many different ways. Serious illnesses and disease are a result of the stress we allow ourselves to experience. Not knowing how to deal with stress is not an excuse and does nothing to reduce the effects of stress. Stress management can be learned and easily implemented into anyone’s life. Simple techniques such as breathing effectively and efficiently can have a profound effect in reducing stress. For more serious conditions, Thought Field Therapy or Emotional Field Therapy can be utilized. With respect to both of the conditions previously mentioned (spasmed muscles and Stress), a healthy lifestyle which utilizes both exercise and nutritional supplementation (with essential nutrients) will make a tremendous difference. Human beings require a full complement of minerals (macro & micro) in order to utilize vitamins properly. We also need Anti-Oxidants to fight off the free radicals created by the toxins in our environment, and a healthy circulatory system to deliver it to all of the cells. Exercise is an easy method of enhancing the circulatory system in the body. Sounds simple doesn’t it? In actuality, it is! The first thing you must do is make a decision. Ask yourself: Do I want to continue to get what I’ve always got, by continuing to do what I’ve always done, or is it time to CHANGE? If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, then it really is time for that change. Start by taking very small incremental positive steps. Don’t try to do it all at once. Remember, you have the rest of your life ahead of you to make the improvements in your life. Just start by doing the obvious. Look in the mirror and be honest with yourself. Let that person in the mirror tell you where you need to start, and then take action. The hardest part of training for running a marathon is putting on those running shoes. Once the shoes are on and you take that first step. it gets easier and easier to take the next. May you have much success on your journey to health! Nevada Corporation And LLC Myths

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Shawn Christopher There is much misinformation that is often spread regarding Nevada corporations and LLC’s. When deciding whether you should form a Nevada Corporation or LLC, you should understand precisely what a Nevada corporation or LLC can provide. With this in mind, you need to be aware of the myths and half-truths that are commonly (and incorrectly) taken as facts. MYTH # 1: Having a Nevada corporation will provide me with complete asset protection. TRUTH: This simply is not true. While having a Nevada corporation can provide some asset protection benefits, the extent of these benefits depends on each unique situation. (You should consult with a lawyer to find out if a Nevada corporation is right for you.) Further, it is common that the principal shareholder(s) of a corporation will have to provide a personal guaranty for many obligations of the corporation, such as leases, credit accounts, etc… As such, when a personal guaranty is given, the Nevada corporation does not provide any asset protection benefit for the obligation that is guaranteed. MYTH # 2: I can avoid taxes in my home state by having a Nevada corporation TRUTH: NO! If a Nevada corporation is conducting business in another state, and that state has a state income tax, then the corporation will have to pay that state’s income tax on the income earned in that state. Simply depositing any income into a Nevada bank account will not magically relieve you having to pay tax on the income. MYTH # 3: Bearer shares are a great way to provide privacy and bolster my asset protection. TRUTH: RUN, don’t walk, away from anyone who recommends bearer shares. The rationale for bearer shares is that since the laws of the State of Nevada do not prohibit them, then they must be allowed. It is true that bearer shares are not illegal under the laws of the State of Nevada. However, just because it may not be illegal, does not mean it is a good practice. The proponents of the bearer share strategy will say that you can use bearer shares to provide asset protection because, whenever you may have a potential claim/creditor try to attach your assets, you can simply hand the shares of the corporation over to a friend or family member to hold the shares. That person is now the owner (i.e. bearer) of the shares, and thus you can tell the creditor that you have no interest in the company or stock for the creditor to attach. This strategy also assumes that the attorney trying to collect on the debt/claim is a moron. Any remotely competent attorney will ask if you ever owned any interest or stock in the corporation, and when did you transfer your interests. To which, you will either: 1) tell the attorney of the bearer share strategy, which creates all kinds of fraudulent transfer issues, as well as possible income and/or gift tax ramifications that you do not even expect; or 2) commit perjury to avoid telling the attorney who you transferred your shares to. HINT: Any asset protection theory that relies on you committing perjury is not much of a strategy. MYTH # 4: Using a nominee director/officer is a good way to provide privacy and bolster my asset protection. TRUTH: Why would you trust a total stranger to have control over your company and assets? The use of nominee directors and officers are usually recommended by self-proclaimed business and legal experts. You will be hard pressed to find a licensed attorney who recommends this strategy. While you may derive some privacy from having a nominee officer and director, this privacy will be lost once the nominee is served a subpoena and asked to provide the contact information for the owners of the company. The nominee will then be legally required to provide this information, and your privacy is gone. Further, the use of a nominee also offers no additional asset protection. MYTH # 5: Privacy = Asset Protection. TRUTH: Just because something is slightly more difficult to find out does not mean you get any additional asset protection benefits. MYTH # 6: Nevada does not share information with the I.R.S., so I can keep my information private. TRUTH: Just because Nevada does not share information with the I.R.S. does not mean that the I.R.S. will not have any information on the company. You will need to provide the I.R.S. with the name and social security number of someone involved with the company to obtain an EIN. Further, the company will be required to prepare tax returns (informational returns for S-corps and most LLCs), on which the names and social security numbers of the owners or members will be provided. Thus, the I.R.S. will end up with this information anyway. SUMMARY: Please do not confuse the lack of an audit with being legal and proper. It is almost comical that there are numerous corporate formation companies that are dispensing legal advice when they are not attorneys. Why would anyone take advice on protecting their assets from someone who is not legally allowed or qualified to provide such advice, much less actually had to argue in support of any of their half-true positions before a judge? The truth is that a Nevada corporation or LLC may be useful to some, but it is not the end answer for every small businessperson, especially those who do not operate in Nevada.
